How to Demonstrate Your 'Fit' for

Duke University (Fuqua)

Fuqua loves enthusiasm and is the ultimate close-knit culture.  Those who gain acceptance to Duke must display an enthusiasm to join “Team Fuqua”, which signals its strong team-driven culture.  Most coursework is done in teams, and Fuqua grads have a solid reputation for being strong team players.  This culture is further enforced by faculty and staff who go out of their way to make Fuqua feel collaborative and intimate.  When you apply to Duke, make it clear that you’re excited to become part of a team-driven community, and why that is exciting for you.  Also clearly signal that you’ll become heavily involved in on-campus activities, as getting involved is considered “being part of the team”.  A big part of the task of getting into business school is to demonstrate that you have a genuine interest in the program.  Since Fuqua’s yield (percentage of accepted applicants who enroll) has traditionally been low, Fuqua is ultra-focused on attracting candidates who have a genuine enthusiasm for the program (case in point: Duke now has an “Early Action Round” to attract candidates who are fully convinced that Duke is their top choice).

Academically, Fuqua has a general management focused curriculum, but students pursue concentrations in two areas.  One area of specific strength for Fuqua is its positioning as a strong healthcare school, thanks to its famous Health Sector Management (HSM) program, which is the largest healthcare-focused program in any top business school.  As such, Fuqua draws a strong supply of healthcare recruiters.  Fuqua also has a heavy focus on global business, and is proud of its three- week Global Institute which allows students to study ethics and leadership in the context of a global business climate.  Showing enthusiasm for global business is not a must, but it can be a differentiator for you if you can do it convincingly.

In your application, make sure to highlight your success working in teams and don’t skip out on making it clear that you heavily involved in your community and during college, if you can.  You should also make a strong point to articulate what you plan to offer Fuqua both in and outside the classroom, and the value you can add to the school based on the skills and knowledge you’ve gained in your professional career to date.
